The local legend surrounding Harpswell Harbor is that a famous phantom ship appeared just before dark and was depicted in a 1866 poem by John Greenleaf Whittier. The poem, titled "The Dead Ship of Harpswell" was said to have changed shape and size, but always appeared sailing straight ahead at full sail, no matter the weather. Was the ghost ship an omen of death? Some think so. The last appearance of the ship was believed to be in the 1880s.
